Raven Mad Days is
an annual celebration of the summer solstice
featuring late night sidewalk sales, food vendors, live bands, games and activities for
children and adults alike. All this and more can be found in the downtown core where
streets are blocked off from 7 p.m. to midnight on the Friday closest to June 21 of each
year.
The tradition was begun by Bromley & Sons Ltd. Hardware, the first local business to
have a midnight madness sales promotion, when they opened their doors from 12:00 a.m.
until 2:00 a.m. on June 21 in 1973. The event has grown and evolved, and now the streets
are blocked off for the thousands of Yellowknifers and an increasing number of tourists
who flock downtown to celebrate the summer solstice and shop for bargains.
The same weekend features the Midnight Sun Golf Tournament (with tee offs all night long). For more on the tournament click here:
The following photographs were taken Friday, June 18, 1999 . The temperature was 28 C (82 F). Click to see full size.
